Dress For Success

compliments of ConsignmentShops.com

First impressions mean everything!  It is very important that upon an interview, or on your first day of a new job, you gain the respect of your coworkers. The knowledge and skill you offer, the way you conduct yourself and the professionalism of your clothing are all influences to that “first impression.” A professional appearance is best portrayed by simple, traditional styles.  Achieving a successful and stylish look can be made easy by following a few simple tips.

On that most important day, the classic business suit is a must. Black, the standard favorite, is a professional choice that portrays self-assurance and integrity. Navy and gray, also traditional colors, emit confidence and nobility. You can’t go wrong with either color as they rate high on the style scale and will remain there for years to come.  Red is a power color. It says, “I am woman!...”  You know the rest.  While we should all possess a measure of self-assurance, overconfidence may be intimidating and inappropriate. The same is true for any color that is bold or flashy. Calming, low-key colors are a safer choice for an interview and your first day.  It’s better your coworkers remember you for your abilities rather than for your choice of attire.

Hemlines are not to be ignored.  There are many lengths to skirts, but the best choice is just above or just below the knee.  In business, the traditional straight skirt is the most popular and most appropriate.  Only TV lawyers can get away with mini skirts and any other length tends to change with the fashion trend.  Pantsuits are acceptable and frequently worn in the business environment.  They too have an air of competence about them, a “Yes, I can” sort of look. Although pantsuits are a refreshing alternative, the skirt remains the classic choice to make that “first impression” a great one.

Accessories should be chosen very carefully as they can make or break your outfit. There is wisdom in the old adage, “less is more.”  Jewelry should be simplified rather than over stated.  Your belt need not match your shoes, but your handbag should. When carrying a briefcase, your handbag should fit inside. Carrying both bags may give the appearance of being cluttered and unorganized. Perfume should be at a minimum, if at all. Red nail-polish is a no-no and hair should be neatly groomed.  For a unified look, your skirt and shoes should match.  Nylons should be nude or the same shade as your matching skirt and shoes. While the heels of your shoes are a matter of personal preference, it would best to between your favorite pair of stilettos and your most compfortable flats..

Remember, not all advice works for everyone. Take from this article only what will work for you. If gray isn’t your color, don’t wear it.   If you only wear skirts to the floor, then don’t go short.  It is always better to be yourself than pretend to be something you are not.  The overall look of your ensemble should be professional, well-coordinated, up-to-date and crisp. Your flair for style should come across as well-dressed and mature to secure a lasting first impression of complete professionalism.

Now that you have reviewed these helpful tips on “dressing for success,” good luck on your interview or your first day on a new job. Looking great will make you feel great and when you feel good about yourself, others will feel good about you too.  That’s a guarantee!
